If we're talking about aliens in general, I believe that life could have formed on different planets much as it formed on our own, but considering the enormous time it takes for a signal to travel through space, we probably won't ever meet another civilization. If a signal took a million years to reach us, we would need to be technologically advanced for a million years after the aliens detected our existence. Since it took us only a few hundred years to be on the verge of a nuclear holocaust, I doubt we'll still be a functioning society in a million years, at least as we know it now.
